HighScope’s plan–do–review is a tiny routine with a big payoff: kids make a plan, carry it out, then reflect. At home, this takes just a few minutes and turns ordinary play into powerful learning.

The 60-Second Loop (your quick start)

  • Plan (1–2 min): “What’s your plan—blocks or drawing? What will you make first?”
  • Do (10–45 min): Step back; join at your child’s level; narrate what you see.
  • Review (1–3 min): “How did it go? What worked? What will you try next time?”

Do this loop 1–3 times a day. Post a tiny visual at child height: Plan → Do → Review.

Script Bank (copy/paste language)

Plan:

  • “Which materials will you use?”
  • “Where will you start?”
  • “What’s your goal—farther or faster?”

Do (while they work):

  • “Tell me about what you’re trying.”
  • “What else could you try?”
  • “You balanced the long block on two short ones.”

Review:

  • “What happened first, next, finally?”
  • “What worked well? What would you change?”
  • “What’s your next idea for tomorrow?”

Swap “Good job!” for descriptive feedback: “You tried three ramps until the car went farther.”

Set Up for Success (no remodel required)

  • 4–6 labeled bins only (fewer choices = deeper play).
  • Picture + word labels on shelves for independence and cleanup.
  • Cozy corner (pillow + 3 books) for quick resets.
  • Outdoor caddy (chalk, buckets, magnifier, rope) by the door.
  • Keep a timer and a pack of sticky notes for plans and turn-taking.

Everyday Examples (with built-in prompts)

Infants & Toddlers (0–2)

  • Treasure Basket: whisk, wooden ring, soft brush, scarf.
Plan: “Which will you try?” → Do: explore → Review: “You shook the keys—jingle!”
  • Pour & Pause: water + cups + funnels.
Plan: “Pour or scoop?” → Review: “The narrow funnel made a thin stream.”

Preschool (3–5)

  • Ramps & Motion: books as ramps + cars/balls.
Plan: “Farther or faster?” → Review: “What changed when it was steeper?”
  • Story Map: draw/build your neighborhood with blocks.
Plan: “Which place first?” → Review: “What will you add tomorrow?”

Early Primary (5–7)

  • Bridge Builders: craft sticks + tape + string.
Plan: “Hold 10 coins or span 30 cm?” → Review: “What will you change?”
  • Market Day: play money + price tags.
Plan: “Shopkeeper or customer?” → Review: “How did you make change?”

Weave It Into Your Day

  • Morning: 60-second plan chat during breakfast; leave a sticky note “plan.”
  • After school: One plan–do–review cycle before screens.
  • Evening: Dinner “family news”—each person shares one plan, one do, one review.

Peaceful Problem-Solving (when conflict pops up)

  1. Name feelings: “You’re both upset.”
  2. State the problem: “You want the same truck.”
  3. Ideas: “What are some solutions?”
  4. Choose a plan: “Timer and switch.”
  5. Follow up: “How did the plan work?”

Troubleshooting (fast fixes)

  • “My child won’t plan.” Offer two real choices and model your own plan.
  • Short attention span. Put out fewer materials; add a simple goal (“Reach the tape line”).
  • Cleanup battles. Match shelf/bin photo labels; use a 60-second cleanup song.
  • Siblings clash. Duplicate high-interest tools; post the peace plan near play.

One-Week Starter Challenge

  • Mon: Ramp Lab (farther vs. faster)
  • Tue: Sock Sort (classify by color/size)
  • Wed: Story Basket (3 objects → tell a tale)
  • Thu: Measure & Mix (cups + rice/water)
  • Fri: Story Map (draw/build a place)
  • Sat: Nature Builder (sticks/leaves → bridge or nest)
  • Sun: Family News at dinner (plan–do–review)

Each day: ask one Plan question, protect Do time, end with a 1–3 min Review.

Printable “Fridge Card” (text you can drop into a PDF)

Plan: “What’s your plan? Which materials? Where will you start?”
