HighScope at home is not a new curriculum to memorize—it’s a way of living and learning with your child: active choices, hands-on play, and short moments to reflect. With a few routines and the right words, ordinary days become rich learning experiences.
The Big Idea (in 20 seconds)
- Active learning: Children learn best by doing—choosing materials, testing ideas, talking about discoveries.
- Plan–Do–Review: A tiny sequence that builds big skills: plan (set a goal) → do (explore) → review (reflect).
- Adult as facilitator: You observe, join at your child’s level, and ask open questions—no lengthy lectures needed.
- Predictable routine: Simple rhythms give security while leaving room for choice and creativity.
Start in 5 Minutes
- Plan (1–2 min): “What’s your plan—blocks or drawing? What will you make first?”
- Do (10–45 min): Step back; join briefly; narrate: “You balanced the long block on two short ones.”
- Review (1–3 min): “How did it go? What worked? What will you try next time?”
Script starters
- Plan: “Which materials will you use?” “Where will you start?”
- Do: “Tell me about what you’re trying.” “What else could you try?”
- Review: “What happened?” “What would you change next time?”
Set Up a Choice-Ready Space (even in a small home)
- Low shelf + 4–6 bins (fewer is better).
- Picture + word labels on bins (Blocks • Cars • Crayons • Tape • Paper).
- Maker basket: paper, tape, crayons, scissors, glue, cardboard.
- Cozy corner: pillow/blanket and a few books for resets.
- Outdoor caddy: chalk, buckets, magnifier, rope, clipboards.
Everyday Materials = Real Learning
Recyclables (boxes, tubes), clothespins, measuring cups, tape, string, plastic containers, old keys, spoons, paper rolls, pebbles/leaves, cards, stickers, rulers, notebooks.
Quick Activities by Age (Plan–Do–Review built in)
Infants & Toddlers (0–2)
- Treasure Basket: whisk, wooden ring, soft brush, scarf. Plan: “Which will you try?” Review: “You tapped the whisk—ting!”
- Roll & Reach: soft balls + low ramp. Plan: “Ball or ramp?” Review: “Which went farther?”
Preschool (3–5)
- Ramps & Motion: boards/books as ramps + cars. Plan: “What’s your goal?” Review: “What changed when it was steeper?”
- Story Map: draw/build your neighborhood with blocks/signs. Plan: “Which place first?” Review: “What will you add tomorrow?”
Early Primary (5–7)
- Bridge Builders: craft sticks, tape, string. Plan: “Hold 10 coins or span 30 cm?” Review: “What will you change?”
- Market Day: price tags + play money. Plan: “Shopkeeper or customer?” Review: “How did you make change?”
A Calm, Predictable Day (sample for preschoolers)
- Morning: Breakfast → Plan today’s play
- Work/Play: 30–60 min uninterrupted Do
- Snack → Review (1–3 min)
- Quiet time: books/rest → Outdoor play → Review
- Family task: help cook/set table → Dinner → Story → Bed
For toddlers: shorter bursts (10–20 min) and more movement/snacks.
Language That Grows Independence
Use descriptive language more than praise:
- Instead of “Good job,” try: “You kept trying different blocks until it stood. That was persistent.”
- Offer choices: “Two materials today—tape or string?”
- Invite reflection: “What new idea do you have for tomorrow?”
Peaceful Problem-Solving (kid-friendly)
- Name feelings: “You’re upset.”
- State problem: “You both want the same truck.”
- Brainstorm: “What are some ideas?”
- Choose a plan: “You’ll set a timer and switch.”
- Follow up: “How did the plan work?”
Document the Learning (fast & simple)
- Snap a photo; add one sentence from your child (“It went faster on the shiny board”).
- Keep a weekly page: 3 photos + “Next idea for Monday.”
Common Hurdles & Quick Fixes
- “My child won’t plan.” Offer two choices and model: “My plan is to draw a road. What’s yours?”
- “Clean-up battles.” Match bin labels to shelf labels; sing a 60-second cleanup song.
- “Short attention span.” Reduce materials; try fresh ones weekly (rotate 20–30%).
- “Too much screen time.” Replace one show with a 15-minute Plan–Do–Review block.
Two-Minute Takeoff
Pick one activity, ask one Plan question, step back during Do, end with a 30-second Review. Repeat tomorrow.
