HighScope at home is about small moments done well—choice, hands-on doing, and brief reflection. Use the ideas below to weave learning into everyday life without worksheets or pressure.
How This Works (in under a minute)
- Plan: Ask one choice-based question (“What’s your plan—blocks or books?”).
- Do: Step back; join at your child’s level; narrate what you see.
- Review: End with a quick reflection (“What worked? What will you try tomorrow?”).
LANGUAGE: Talk, Tell, and Play with Words
Everyday habits
- Narrate the day: “You zipped your jacket and tucked the sleeve in.”
- Echo + extend: Child: “Car go fast.” You: “Yes, the red car sped down the steep ramp.”
- Choice prompts: “Which book first—animals or trucks?”
Quick activities
- Story Basket: 3–5 objects (spoon, leaf, toy dog). Plan: “Which character starts?” Review: “What happened first/next/finally?”
- Label the World: Make picture+word labels for toy bins/doors. Review: “How did labels help clean up?”
- Sound Hunt (3–5+): Pick a sound (/s/ or kitchen noises). Plan: “Where will you listen first?”
- Family News (all ages): At dinner, each person shares one “plan,” one “do,” one “review” from the day.
Teacher/parent moves
- Use rich vocabulary (steep, sturdy, compare).
- Ask open questions: “What else could you try?”
- Capture a dictation quote under a photo once a week.
MATH: Count, Compare, Measure—No Worksheets Needed
Everyday habits
- Count with purpose: “We need 4 forks—help me check.”
- Compare & classify: “These socks match; these don’t. What’s your rule?”
- Estimate, then check: “How many steps to the door—your guess?”
Quick activities
- Ramp Lab (3–5+): Books as ramps + cars/balls. Plan: “Farther or faster?” Do: test surfaces. Review: “Which went farthest?”
- Snack Math (2–5): Share crackers fairly. Review: “How did we make it equal?”
- Pattern Play (2–7): Spoon-cup-spoon-cup… Review: “What comes next? How do you know?”
- Measure & Mix (kitchen): Cups/scoops with rice/water. Plan: “Which recipe—2 cups/1 scoop?” Review: “Which container filled fastest?”
Teacher/parent moves
- Say math out loud (number, size, more/fewer, longer/shorter).
- Invite children to record with simple tally marks or dots.
SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL: Feelings, Friendship, and Self-Control
Everyday habits
- Name feelings: “You look frustrated.”
- Job chart: Line leader, botanist, librarian—build responsibility.
- Cozy corner: A small spot to reset with books/fidgets.
5-Step Peace Plan (kid-friendly)
- Feelings: “You’re both upset.”
- Problem: “You both want the blue truck.”
- Ideas: “What are some solutions?”
- Plan: “Timer and switch.”
- Follow-up: “How did the plan work?”
Quick activities
- Feelings Match (2–7): Faces on cards; match situations. Review: “What could help that feeling?”
- Team Build (3–7): Build one structure together. Review: “How did we share jobs?”
Parent moves
- Model calm language and choice (“You can trade or set a timer”).
- Praise effort and strategies (“You tried three ways before it stood”).
15-Minute Mini Plans (by age)
Infants & Toddlers (0–2)
- Treasure Basket: Safe household items. Plan: “Which will you try?” Review: “You shook the keys—jingle!”
- Pour & Pause: Water, cups, funnels. Review: “The narrow funnel made a thin stream.”
Preschool (3–5)
- Story Map: Draw/build your neighborhood with blocks. Plan: “Which place first?” Review: “What will you add tomorrow?”
- Sort & Graph: Buttons/caps by color/size. Review: “Which group had the most?”
Early Primary (5–7)
- Bridge Builders: Craft sticks, tape, string. Plan: “Hold 10 coins or span 30 cm?” Review: “What will you change?”
- Market Day: Play money, price tags. Review: “How did you make change?”
Make It Stick (fast systems)
- 4–6 labeled bins at child height; rotate 20–30% weekly.
- Post a tiny visual: Plan → Do → Review.
- One photo + one child quote each week; keep a simple “Learning Wall.”
Troubleshooting Quick Fixes
- Won’t choose? Offer two options and model your own plan.
- Short attention? Fewer materials; add a simple goal (“Make the car reach the tape”).
- Cleanup battles? Match shelf/bin photo labels; use a 60-second cleanup song.
- Sibling clashes? Duplicate high-interest items; use the Peace Plan.
